Episode 5: Viking on a Van

27 May

LISTEN NOW ABOVE

Reaching a milestone of five episodes, Chuck and Todd burst back on the Internet to make more fun of people who aren’t them. Just kidding, they also make fun of each other, too.

This week, we have the Wheelnerds’ first official music review. Erik Buell’s in a band! Imagine Chuck’s reaction to such news. As expected, he brings a copy of the band’s album, Anthem, and makes Todd listen to it.

Is there no end to this man’s talent? Chuck says, “No.”

The Wheelnerds rap about what it’s like talking to the people who don’t ride, particularly your friends and co-workers. Cuz that never happens…

This week’s testride review is after the jump:

PUSH FOR GO!

Here’s a snip where Todd’s talking about the almighty push-start. I learned the push-start on the VFR, thankfully in a parking lot of favorable slope and weather. Howbout you?

Subscriber bonus noise!

If you’re hooked up with our .RSS feed (either in Itunes, Blackberry, gPodder or whatever the case may be), then you’re going to see a bonus little out take clip that didn’t make the show, but was too funny for us to leave on the bottom of Todd’s… whatever it is he wear while he edits the show. Enjoy!

Episode 4: My Friend, Bud Miller

20 May

LISTEN NOW ABOVE

We’re back! And we’re continuing to talk about going on the Big Trip (as Big as you wanna make it). Our discussion this week talks about preparing. How much is too much? How much is too little? One example that caught our eye is this video of Rick Peterson and his prepped-out GS1200 that was posted to ADV. Quite simply, we’re kinda of in awe of just how much stuff he can squeeze on there. But we also wonder, did he need it? A lot of people didn’t think he did and said so. Some of them said it in kind of hostile ways. Why the hate? We talk about that, too. Cuz, that’s what we do. Check out the video below and join our discussion. Listen to what we have to say and send us your thoughts about it. What’s your take?

Then, we talk about eating. Which, like camping, we have a lot to say about when it comes to cooking on the road. Here’s the EZ-GRILL that Chuck talks about wanting to try. Let him know if you’ve used it and if it’s a waste of his time or not. Todd is a bit dubious. And because Chuck can’t leave well enough alone, he also trots out this wondrous little gadget. Todd is even more dubious. Instead of cooking, we talk about eating along the way and what we look for in a place before we drag our dirtbag butts in and demand burgers.

TASTE THE ADVENTURE!!

Half this show just wouldn’t be possible without the fine folks at Touratech. I bet they’re glad they stuck the catalog in the box now…

Episode 3: Hooker Castle

13 May

LISTEN NOW ABOVE

For this week’s episode of Wheelnerds, we take a crack at chipping away at our favorite topic and despite the title above, it’s not hookers. No, we’re talking about the Big Trip. You know, the days-long ride away from home, job, responsibility, and good hygiene. We’re both big fans of motorcycle camping, so we’re talking a bit about that. It turns out to be a really big topic, so it’s something we’ll be chipping away at on this and future shows. We have a lot to say about it, it turns out. Some of it even helpful!

For this week’s test ride, we went out and bombed around on the Piaggio MP3 three-wheeled scooter!

Here’s a little taste of this week’s episode entitled ‘Hooker Castle’, releasing Friday, where Todd and I are discussing the quality curve of available adult entertainment in Ely, Nevada. Don’t ask me why. I promise we talk about motorcycles in there somewhere… :)

Honda VFR 1200. The Wheelnerds are coming.

7 May

So, Todd heard from someone that heard from someone else that the Honda dealers are being encouraged to grant test rides on the VFR 1200. Free riding of someone else’s bikes?

THE WHEELNERDS ARE THERE!

There’s something like three Honda dealers all relatively close together here. We’re going to see which one we can get rides from. Hopefully, the patented Chuck Dirtbag Effect won’t throw us off today. I was thinking maybe if I wear a tie? I don’t have a Honda T-shirt. That might help. Maybe if I get a magic marker and write ‘H0NDA!4EVA’ on a shirt that might help, too. I’ve yet to be on a newer generation of VFR then my own venerable Gen-5 VFR (which is one of the best all-around street bikes. EVER.) I’ve been sort of odds with the technological directions they’ve been taking the bike in (V-TEC? Automatic tranny? I just want it to transform it into a damn robot before I’ll take it seriously!)

We’re also in preparations for the Slow Road to Durango road trip. For me, a road trip is a good reason to farkle. And the Buell needs some farkling since I’ve spent all of winter with its transmission exploded across my garage. None of the Big projects will be done in time, but I’m doing some small stuff like throwing on some throttle rockers, heat shield on a rear header, and a dead sheep cover for the Corbin. I just changed the oil, (and tranny oil har har har, and front fork oil HAR HAR HAR.) Need to take a good long look at the tires and decide about those. The Dunlop 616s seem to be good-wearing tires if nothing else, so far.

The Buell runs. Don’t make your surprised face. Dammit.

Episode 2: Bounce Houses, Not Bands

6 May

LISTEN NOW ABOVE

Hey, looky, we’re back for another week! First, after the really awesome first show, we realized that there was a lot of stuff we just don’t know about recording a podcast. Like not having your smartphones parked on the desk next to the mic, next to the really loud computer doing the recoding. We did mention we’re nerds, right? We took care of those problems right quick and our audio quality improved drastically. For this week’s show, we talk about the mystical and black art of (mystical and black to Chuck) wrenching on your own bike. Related to that is buying and selling a used bike and what goes along with that. Stuff to avoid and what we look for and want to do. Then we gripe and rant. About dealerships. AND THE BANDS. Why is there always a band? We don’t get it and we’re not real clear anyone else does, either. We’re all for free food at dealer events, but the Wheelnerds will pass on the band.

For this episode, we have our first official Wheelnerd Test Ride of the awesome, no-holds-barred, wind-in-the-hair Honda Nighthawk 250!!11ONEONE

We talk about this explosion of power and other coolness. And why you ought to get one. Really. It costs like a buck and they’re everywhere.
