Ep 21: The Call of Nature

16 Sep

Well, show 21. This marks the end of what we’re calling Season One of the Wheelnerds. We’ll be taking a break to allow Todd time for his wedding/honeymooning. For this week, we talk to John Bunce of John’s Alaska. John did the ‘Big Trip’ from Connecticut to Alaska on his bike. It’s interesting to hear the trends that we pick up from these guys that manage to go ahead and do the ‘Trip.’ They all seem to have some common ideas and Todd and I talk about it while dreaming up our own ‘Big Trip.’

Go check out John’s site: http://www.johnsalaska.com/ and watch his videos and plunk down a buck to pick up an e-copy of his ride report. Nice job on documenting the trip!

This week’s Classified has already been taken down. Hope he found the bike.

Here is the motorcycle safety video that we talked about:

Pretty jarring stuff when I first saw it. Speaking of videos, we’ve seen the Nissan one with the Juke running down bikes, but it just makes me go ‘eh.’ What’s funny is that the Juke is actually the car I’m thinking of picking up if/when my 12-year old Subby gives up the ghost! Guess I’ll lose my biker cred if I’m seen in it now for sure, huh? Damn marketing!

Any bets on when Franca finally ponies up for her own S1000RR and stops crashing the dealer-loaned ones? :D

That’s it for us. Don’t forget we’re offering stickers and other stuff up on the ‘Merchandise’ page at the top. Help us get some beer and taco money!

Also, send us a photo entry for the Adventure Starbucks contest. I got the prize in the mail from Touratech…

That’s some hardcore TP right there!

We’ll be back in a couple weeks with more shows on motorcycles and.. stuff. Thanks for listening and being a part of the fun! Keep writing us. We answer every email we get (most of the time sober even!).

Don’t forget about our official Wheelnerds Disorganized Unpaid Correspondent Program. Basically, we want to hear some stuff from you! Ridden a bike (like your own) and got an opinion? Got a cool piece of gear or farkle? Got a story? Know some jokes? Record an MP3 (or whatever) and email it to us at wheelnerds@gmail.com. We’ll throw it on the air and talk about it, too. That’s right, you can be the first on your block to be openly mocked by the Wheelnerds. Alternatively, you could call our google talk # to the right there and leave us a message if you’ve got no way to record something. Or, even cooler, (to me, anyway), you can now also leave us a voicemail via Skype! Our skype ID iswheelnerds. Just go ahead, call, and leave us your story there! (We still read your emails, too, and will answer them on the show). If you got something really cool, shoot us a line and maybe we’ll talk to you live, too.

As always, you can listen to the episode above or download direct here:

Ep 21: Teaser

14 Sep

This week is going to be the end of season ‘one’ for the show. We’re like a cable network where we don’t actually mean anything by ‘seasons’ but it sounds good. Also, listening to this, I think we have some hostility issues or something…

Merchandise!

We gots it finally posted! Also, we’ve got new all-vinyl decals for sale now, in addition to the paper ones!

Ep 20: Value Add Service

9 Sep

Sorry for the late posting today. We were all off in the woods last night roasting Todd for his upcoming wedding. I think we all made it back with our fingers and toes. For this week, we got a lot of pretty cool dealings going down. Here’s your ever helpful reading supplement!

The motorcycle cleaning “service” lady She’s added another picture since the ad first went up, so I’m going to have take back what I said in the show and go with this being a legitimate ad. I don’t actually wash my bikes, unless I’m about to sell them. The last time I did was during a road trip last year when my friend and I pulled our bikes in for a high school fundraiser carwash in Tonopah, NV and that was largely for giggles. Took those kids awhile to work out which bits to wash. Maybe one of our Canadian listeners are close enough to take advantage of this and send us a story…

Need a ‘new’ helmet? Here ya go. Someone please.. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS THING? Please… someone identify it. We got no idea. And why is it in an ad for helmets?

And once you rock his helmet, you’ll need a bike right? Well, here ya go! Remember, don’t lowball it. Lowball the trailer you’ll need it for it!

On a more serious note, Butler Motorcycle Maps are the real thing: http://www.butlermaps.com/ They’re working their way through the country starting with the West. These are NICE maps. I’m looking forward to getting a lot of use out of my Utah one and I’m hoping to get these guys to come talk to us about their business.

Our guest this week is Mike Uchitel. Mike is, if I got this right, the sales manager for BMW Motorcycles of Utah (http://www.bmwmotorcyclesofutah.com) BMW is one marque offered by their group, which includes Triumph, Vespa, and Big Dog (no, really!). The main site is http://www.utmoto.com/ and that’ll take you to any of them. It’s an interesting setup when you physically see the layout. BMW building on one side, Vespa building on the other, and Big Dog in the middle. Mike’s a really passionate guy about the business and he gives us an EARFUL (and likely sold me a bike).

We have a test ride report this week from one of our Disorganized Unpaid Correspondents! More after the jump:

Ep 20: Teaser

7 Sep

I have no idea what this week’s show is about and I don’t even care a little. I’m just going to hit ‘replay’ on this a couple more times…

Ep 19: Sofa King Buell

1 Sep

For this week, we start out talking about some movie bikes that made the leap from the big screen to real life. What’s one of our favorite movie bikes? BATMAN’s!

Not this Batman’s…

Hell, yeah. Here’s a couple of those real life BatPods:

Street-Legal and ready to go… straight!~

Chopper City's Street Legal Bat PodThe Street Legal Bat Pod from Chopper City

I don’t know if this one is street legal. It looks a bit truer to the inspiration than the Chopper City one:

Who’s brave enough to hit the nitrous?

These are obviously pretty cool, but also, obviously one-offs. Howbout something you can just pick up and order straight from a catalog? Howabout something from Tron? Yeah, man…
