The intro for today’s show was sent in by Joel Cramer and his 1983 Suzuki GR 650. Thanks, Joel! We got a couple more we’ll be adding to the show in the weeks to come, but you can send yours in to us, too. Keep it simple, say the name of the show and give us a good noise… preferably of your bike. I spend enough time listening to noises come outta Todd’s body, I don’t need to hear yours.
Welcome back to Todd! He’s back from the Great Northwest and ready to sit in the closet and talk motorcycles and … stuff. To celebrate, we have a feast in the Wheelnerds Cave, thanks to a suggestion from Craig. We chow down into some sandwiches… in a CAN!
Todd’s out for this week’s show. But never fear, instead of an hour of listening to Chuck blunder stupidly alone on the air, you get an hour of Chuck blundering stupidly on the air while getting mocked by James Reazor and Chris Hornberger of The Pace Podcast… The veteran podcasters of the Pace sit in with Chuck and shoot the bull. We talk about Chuck’s shiny new Triumph Thruxton. What his experience at the dealership was like compared to how previous interview Mike talked about it. We talk about selling a bike to someone who’s seemingly not so moto-inclined. And, oh yeah, we talk a little about that podcast thing those two guys also do on the side. I think they’re up to about 15 listeners or so, which is about double or triple ours, depending on internet privileges at local finer institutions of mental health care!
We do a test ride report this week on the Triumph Scrambler, a “modern interpretation of a timeless classic”. Todd would call this “poseur vintage.” That probably didn’t sound as good to the marketing folks as the former. The last time we rode one of these, it was a pre-fuel injected model and we’ve just been riding modern bikes for the past couple hours so the Scrambler had an uphill battle to climb.
Now that he has an eye for a retro-inspired bike, Chuck climbs back on the Scrambler and beats it around and comes back to tell the tale. He even feels a little cooler for it… that might just be the Thruxton that followed him home, though.
Don’t forget about our official Wheelnerds Disorganized Unpaid Correspondent Program. Basically, we want to hear some stuff from you! Ridden a bike (like your own) and got an opinion? Got a cool piece of gear or farkle? Got a story? Know some jokes? Record an MP3 (or whatever) and email it to us at wheelnerds@gmail.com. We’ll throw it on the air and talk about it, too. That’s right, you can be the first on your block to be openly mocked by the Wheelnerds. Alternatively, you could call our google talk # to the right there and leave us a message if you’ve got no way to record something. Or, even cooler, (to me, anyway), you can now also leave us a voicemail via Skype! Our skype ID iswheelnerds. Just go ahead, call, and leave us your story there! (We still read your emails, too, and will answer them on the show). If you got something really cool, shoot us a line and maybe we’ll talk to you live, too.

Todd was out on a special forces mission for the US Govt. The kind where they disavow all knowledge of you and then blow up your cool new mp3 player. Chuck got some special Fake Todds to sit in for this week, though!
I’m talking about foreshadowing! This week’s bonus clip for subscribers to the feed (or just click on it to the right there) will get some! Listen to an unknowing Chuck describe his doom! In the feed and ready for listening.
Just a short note here, this week we’re talking about beginning riders. We have quite a few riders who listen that are new and frequently write to us so we wanted to do another show to talk about getting into motorcycling and things to keep in mind. We talk first steps, seconds steps, and missteps. We also have an interview with the new rider who went down a couple weeks back following Chuck and get his perspective on his crash and how he’s doing. I think the most surprising thing I picked up from talking to him was the importance of hard armor versus the heavy padding that some protective gear has. The stuff Jon was wearing did a pretty good job of keeping him from getting rashed up and possibly more seriously injured, but he might have been able to avoid even more if there had been some actual hard armor in the shoulder and knee areas. Food for thought, I guess.

It turns out if you go riding with Chuck and you crash without a ride in the ambulance, you can sort of expect him to be a dick about it afterwards (especially if he’s got 12 hour work days happening).
If you haven’t seen it already on our Facebook page, here’s Todd taking Chuck’s new Triumph Thruxton out for a test spin (while being ever mindful of the 3K rev limit imposed by breakin)… At least, he BETTER have been mindful of it!
We’re back! There are some server issues at the moment I’m writing this. I’m hoping by morning they’re cleared up. If not, please be patient and I’ll get with hosting to see what the problem is. In the meantime…
http://teizms.com/teizblog/?p=66 – Ghazi on waterproofing and what you can do about it. I’m a BIG fan of the Lombard V3 suit I have from Teiz and largely agree with him on what he’s got to say about waterproofing. From the way Todd is talking, I see one of those Powershells in his future!
